How to create a packaging profile

A packaging profile bundles one or more constraints that modify how PackGuard calculates box suggestions for the products assigned to that profile. Constraints can add padding around products, restrict which box types are allowed, force upright orientation, or require an insulated box.

When to use this: you have a product group that needs special packaging treatment — fragile items that need foam padding, bottles that must ship upright, or chilled goods that need an insulated box.

Prerequisite: Admin access with the ssd_packguard.creator role or higher. Navigate to Orders > PackGuard > Packaging Profiles.

Step 1 — Create the profile

  1. Click Add profile in the smart-bar.
  2. In the General card:
    • Name — the internal label shown when assigning this profile to products (e.g. Fragile — foam padded)
    • Description — optional notes about the intended use
    • Active — leave ticked
    • Sort Order — lower values are evaluated first when multiple profiles could apply
  3. Click Save to create the profile and unlock the Constraints card.

Step 2 — Add constraints

The Constraints card lists the rules attached to this profile. Click the constraint picker at the bottom of the card to add a type. Each type can be added at most once per profile.

Padding

Adds a fixed amount of foam or filler space around every product in this profile.

  • Padding per side — the extra space added to each face of the product (stored in mm; use the unit dropdown to enter in cm)
  • Exempt from empty space calculation — when ticked, the padding volume counts as legitimate fill rather than waste. Use this for foam inserts where the void is intentional and PPWR-compliant.

The collapsed summary line reads e.g. 10 mm per side · exempt from empty space.

Orientation

Forces PackGuard to only suggest boxes where the internal height is at least equal to the tallest product dimension — ensuring the product ships upright.

  • Orientation mode — currently only Upright only is available

The collapsed summary line reads Upright only.

Allowed box types

Restricts suggestions to specific box types from your catalog.

  • Allowed box types — tick one or more of Carton, Polybag, Padded Envelope, Custom

The collapsed summary line reads e.g. Restricted to: Carton, Padded Envelope.

Insulated packaging

Requires that the suggested box has the Insulated flag set. Use for temperature-sensitive products such as food, cosmetics, or pharmaceuticals.

The collapsed summary line reads Requires insulated box.

Step 3 — Reorder or remove constraints

  • Click Edit on a constraint card to expand its fields inline.
  • Click Move up / Move down to reorder. Position affects evaluation order when constraints interact (e.g. padding is applied before fit checks).
  • Click Delete to remove a constraint. Removing a constraint type makes it available to add again.

Step 4 — Save

Click Save in the smart-bar. The profile is now available for assignment to products.
