Run a referral programme

Reward Engine can reward customers for bringing in friends. Each customer gets a unique referral link; when a friend uses it, the engine records a referral redemption and can reward both sides — once when the friend joins, and again on the friend's first order.

How it works

  • Every customer can have a referral link containing a generated code. Code length is controlled by the Referral code length setting (default 8 characters) — see the configuration reference.
  • When a new customer signs up or orders through a referral link, the engine fires the corresponding event:
    • Referral – Friend joined — the referred friend created an account.
    • Referral – Friend's first order — the referred friend completed their first order.
  • You decide the reward for each milestone by creating ways to earn that respond to these referral events.

Set it up

  1. Confirm the Referral code length setting suits your needs.
  2. Create a way to earn that fires on Friend joined (e.g. award points to the referrer).
  3. Create a second way to earn that fires on Friend's first order (e.g. award both referrer and friend).
  4. Surface each customer's referral link in your storefront customer account so they can share it.

Track results

Referral redemptions are recorded as entities and the resulting point movements appear in Point Activity and the reward log. Both referral events are also available in Flow Builder, so you can send a "thanks for referring a friend" email — see Set up points expiry and warning emails for the Flow Builder pattern.
